This violet 20-centesimi stamp was issued in 1930 to commemorate the 4th centenary of the death of Francesco Ferrucci ("IV Centenario F. Ferrucci"), a celebrated Florentine military captain who died fighting imperial forces at the Battle of Gavinana in August 1530. Re-purposed for the colonial postal network, the stamp carries a crisp horizontal "SOMALIA ITALIANA" overprint. The narrative engraving illustrates Ferrucci mounted on horseback, reviewing a phalanx of Florentine pikemen and armored foot soldiers with a hilltop fortress rising in the background. The design projects an intentional institutional theme of tactical leadership, martial discipline, and historical regional heroism.
