Virgil Bi-Millenary: Aeneas Sighting Ausonia
This grey 15-centesimi stamp was issued in 1930 to mark the bi-millenary of the classical Roman epic poet Virgil ("Secondo Millenario Virgiliano"). Originally an Italian commemorative stock, the issue was repurposed for East Africa using a distinct dark red "SOMALIA" overprint across the top. The classical vignette, designed within a structural temple pediment frame, illustrates a dramatic scene from the Aeneid (Book III): the Trojan hero Aeneas standing at the prow of his galley ship as his helmsman points toward the horizon, matching the Latin inscription "Ecce tibi Ausoniae tellus..." ("Lo, there is the land of Italy..."). The side panels display the ancestral prophecy "Antiquam exquirite matrem" ("Seek out your ancient mother"), linking the territory's communication network directly to classical Roman literary heritage and imperial lineage.
