This light purple 50-centesimi stamp stems from the 1931 series commemorating the 7th centenary of the death of Saint Anthony of Padua ("VII Centenario Antoniano 1231–1931"). Modified with a bold blue "SOMALIA" overprint across the central vignette, the architectural engraving illustrates the majestic Pontifical Basilica of Saint Anthony (Basilica di Sant'Antonio) located in Padua, Italy. Built shortly after his canonization to house his tomb, this monumental sanctuary features a remarkable blend of Byzantine domes, Romanesque facades, and Gothic interior details, representing a masterpiece of medieval architectural engineering. Surrounded by an ornate floral border, this issue used an iconic symbol of religious pilgrimage and heritage to authorize regular postal transit within the East African territory.
