The Legislative Assembly of Somalia (Assemblea Legislativa della Somalia / الجمعية التشريعية الأولى) was established following the general elections held in February 1956 in the Trust Territory of Somaliland. Replacing the earlier consultative Territorial Council, this newly formed parliament marked the introduction of internal self-government and parliamentary democracy in Somalia under United Nations trusteeship. The assembly held its historic first legislative session in Mogadishu in 1956, leading directly to the formation of the first indigenous Somali cabinet headed by Prime Minister Abdullahi Issa Mohamud.
The design commemorates the dawn of universal civic participation and democratic representation (1ª ASSEMBLEA LEGISLATIVA 1956). It depicts a modern Somali citizen in western shirt and trousers alongside a traditional elder wrapped in a classic tobe (flowing white cloth), both participating in the democratic process by casting their ballots into a ballot box. In the background, the outline of the Horn of Africa map highlights the territorial emergence and national unity of the Somali people on the path to full independence.
