4th Somalia Trade Fair & Film Festival / Irrigation Canals

The Irrigation Canals (Canali di Irrigazione) project reflected widespread land reclamation and hydraulic engineering efforts across the inter-riverine plains of the Juba and Shabelle river basins. Initiated to support the expanding cultivation of high-value cash crops such as bananas, sugarcane, and cotton, these mechanized canal networks diverted vital river waters into expansive agricultural fields, transforming semi-arid floodplains into productive agrarian land.

Featured as part of the airmail series for the 4th Somalia Trade Fair & Film Festival, the image captures heavy earth-moving crawler tractors and motorized graders excavating and grading the sloped embankments of a major primary irrigation channel. The scene highlighted the introduction of modern mechanized heavy equipment and civil engineering to boost agricultural yields and ensure economic viability for the emerging independent state.
