5th Somalia Trade Fair- Port of Mogadishu

The Port of Mogadishu (Porto di Mogadiscio) served as the maritime lifeline for international commerce, agricultural exports, and passenger transport during the trusteeship period. Expanded and modernized under the AFIS administration, the port handled the export of southern agrarian goods (such as bananas and sugar) alongside northern aromatics and livestock destined for markets across the Indian Ocean and Mediterranean.

Featured on the highest value of the 1959 Trade Fair airmail series, the blue-toned composition balances heritage and modern infrastructure. In the foreground, an earthenware girgire releases plumes of aromatic smoke, while behind it lie the piers, loading jetties, and an ocean liner docked at the port of Mogadishu under an incoming airliner, symbolizing the maritime and aerial connectivity of the soon-to-be independent republic.
