Opening of University Institute of Somalia - 1.2 somalo
The University Institute of Somalia (Istituto Universitario della Somalia / المعهد الجامعي بالصومال), established in Mogadishu in 1954 and expanded through the late 1950s under the Trust Territory administration (AFIS), was the direct forerunner of the Somali National University (Jaamacadda Ummadda Soomaaliyeed). Created in partnership with Italian universities notably the University of Rome and the University of Padua the institute provided higher education in law, economics, political science, and public administration to prepare a new generation of Somali civil servants, jurists, and administrators to lead the state upon independence.
Designed by Corrado Mancioli for the 1959 airmail series, the stamp composition highlights the modernist, mid-century architectural façade of the new university building in Mogadishu, featuring prominent sun-shading louvers (brise-soleil). In the upper-right corner is the official emblem of the institute—incorporating the Somali leopard, the scales of justice over an open book of law, and the crescent and star. An airliner cruising overhead symbolizes modern international academic ties, institutional progress, and the intellectual foundation of the emerging republic.
