The World Refugee Year (Anno Mondiale del Rifugiato / السنة العالمية للاجئين), proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly under Resolution 1285 (XIII) for 1959–1960, was a landmark global humanitarian campaign. Coordinated by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the initiative aimed to refocus international attention, mobilize financial resources, and secure permanent resettlement solutions for millions of displaced persons worldwide following World War II and various regional conflicts. As a UN Trust Territory preparing for full sovereignty, Somalia actively joined this worldwide philatelic and humanitarian effort.
Designed by Corrado Mancioli, the composition features a terrestrial globe centered prominently on the Horn of Africa, the Red Sea, and the Arabian Peninsula. Superimposed at the base of the Horn is the official international symbol of World Refugee Year: an uprooted tree finding new life and stability within protective, cupped hands. This motif symbolizes humanitarian shelter, international solidarity, and the fundamental right of uprooted populations to find peace, dignity, and a permanent home.
