Proclamation of Independence (1° Luglio 1960)
On July 1, 1960, the Trust Territory of Somalia officially achieved full sovereignty, uniting immediately with the newly independent State of Somaliland to establish the Somali Republic. This milestone concluded the ten-year United Nations trusteeship administration (AFIS) and fulfilled the aspirations of the Somali national movement. To commemorate the birth of the new republic, the postal authorities issued this definitive commemorative stamp, marking a triumphant moment in the broader "Year of Africa" decolonization wave across the continent.
Designed by the renowned graphic artist Corrado Mancioli, the composition presents a deeply symbolic visual narrative against a soft lilac background. A silhouette map of Africa anchors the design, upon which the national flag—a white five-pointed star on a sky-blue field is planted directly over the Horn of Africa. Above it, a native gazelle grazes peacefully, serving as an allegory of natural heritage, calm, and sovereign tranquility, while dual inscriptions in Italian (1° Luglio 1960 Proclamazione Indipendenza) and Arabic (إعلان الاستقلال) formally record the proclamation of national independence.
