Issued in late 1960 following national independence, the Pro Infanzia (في سبيل الأطفال / "For Children") semi-postal series was designed to support early childhood education, maternal health initiatives, and public welfare programs across the newly established Somali Republic. A surcharge was levied to fund schools, youth recreational infrastructure, and healthcare centers. This opening value focuses on the expansion of primary schooling, basic literacy, and early creative development in post-independence Somalia.

Designed by Corrado Mancioli, the artwork depicts a young Somali schoolboy standing at a classroom chalkboard, sketching the outline of an indigenous giraffe with white chalk.
