Child Welfare (Pro Infanzia): African Leopard / Panthera pardus

The African Leopard (Panthera pardus pardus, known locally in Somali as Shabeel) holds a revered place in the cultural heritage and national symbolism of Somalia. Endemic across the savannas, river valleys, and rocky escarpments of the Horn of Africa—most notably giving its name to the Shabelle River (Wabiga Shabeelle, "River of the Leopard")—the animal has long symbolized agility, strength, and vigilance, serving as the proud heraldic supporter on the National Coat of Arms adopted in 1956.

Designed by Corrado Mancioli as the highest denomination (3 So. Airmail) of the late 1960 Pro Infanzia (في سبيل الأطفال) semi-postal release, the artwork captures a leopard stealthily creeping along a tree branch in stalking posture. Framed against split geometric panels of green and sky blue, the issue raised funds to support pediatric healthcare and youth educational institutions across the newly unified republic.
