Speke's Gazelle (Gazella spekei)
Phillips's Dik-Dik (Madoqua phillipsi, or Madoqua kirkii phillipsi) is a tiny, delicate antelope belonging to the dwarf antelope subfamily Neotraginae, native to the semi-arid bushlands, rocky hillsides, and dense acacia scrub of Somalia and the Horn of Africa. Perfectly adapted to water-scarce environments, this miniature ungulate derives virtually all its hydration from succulent foliage, dew, and desert fruits. It is distinguished by its elongated, mobile, proboscis-like snout—which helps cool its blood via nasal panting—as well as large preorbital scent glands positioned prominently beneath its expressive dark eyes and short, backward-pointing horns in males. Living in monogamous pairs that fiercely defend compact home territories, the dik-dik plays a crucial ecological role as a primary browser of lower acacia shoots and a vital prey species for local carnivores and birds of prey.
