4th Somalia Trade Fair & Film Festival / Oil Drilling Rig
The Oil Drilling Rig (Sonda Petrolifera) highlighted the extensive geological surveying and hydrocarbon exploration initiatives undertaken across the Horn of Africa during the 1950s under the Trust Territory administration (AFIS). Conducted in partnership with international petroleum consortia—notably the Italian national hydrocarbon agency ENI (Agip Mineraria) and American concessionaires—exploratory deep drilling programs were launched across the central and southern plains of Somalia to evaluate fossil fuel deposits and establish energy sovereignty. Featured on the airmail issue for the 4th Somalia Trade Fair & Film Festival (4ª Fiera della Somalia - Festival Cinematografico), the dramatic vertical composition depicts a heavy rotary drilling derrick against a vibrant red background. The stamp celebrated the arrival of advanced heavy industrial technology, subsurface energy prospecting, and the economic potential of mineral resource development for the emerging Somali nation.
