First Territorial Council of Somalia - 0.55 somalo
Issued in 1951, this stamp commemorates the First Territorial Council of Somalia, an important milestone in the political development of the Trust Territory of Somalia under United Nations administration. The design depicts members of the Territorial Council assembled in session, symbolizing the emergence of representative institutions and the gradual transfer of administrative responsibilities to Somali leaders in preparation for self-government and independence. By issuing this commemorative stamp, the Trust Territory of Somalia highlighted the significance of constitutional and political progress during the final stages of the trusteeship period. The issue celebrated the establishment of representative government and emphasized the aspirations of the Somali people for self-administration, national development, and independence, which would be achieved later that same year with the creation of the Somali Republic on 1 July 1960.
