Adenium somalense
Adenium somalense, commonly known as the Somali Desert Rose, is a succulent shrub or small tree in the dogbane family (Apocynaceae), native to the arid and semi-arid scrublands of Somalia and the broader Horn of Africa. Adapted to extreme drought conditions, the plant features a swollen, water-storing caudex (basal stem) and thick, fleshy branches that allow it to thrive in rocky, dry terrain. Its striking pink-to-crimson star-shaped flowers bloom prominently even in harsh desert environments, making it one of the most distinctive botanical symbols of the region's xerophytic flora. Historically, the plant held significant cultural and practical importance for local pastoralist communities, who traditionally extracted its toxic cardiac-glycoside-rich sap for use in arrow poisons for hunting and protection. Issued as part of a post-independence botanical series celebrating the rich biodiversity of the Horn of Africa, this issue highlights the flowering branches of the species against a clear sky, showcasing Somalia's unique native natural heritage to the international community.
