Pancratium trianthum
Pancratium trianthum (commonly known as the Desert Sea Daffodil or Spider Lily) is a bulbous perennial herb belonging to the amaryllis family (Amaryllidaceae). Indigenous to the dry savannas, sandy riverbanks, and semi-arid plains across the African Sahel and the Horn of Africa, the plant has evolved to survive intense heat and prolonged dry spells through its deep-seated underground bulb. Following brief seasonal rainfall, it rapidly sends up slender, ribbon-like foliage and large, fragrant white flowers featuring a delicate, funnel-shaped coronal cup surrounded by long, narrow, star-like petals. The species holds a prominent place in traditional pharmacology and local folklore across African arid zones, where its bulb preparations were utilized by pastoralists in low, controlled doses for treating respiratory ailments and localized swellings. Featured within Somalia's definitive botanical series, the artwork depicts a solitary, delicate white bloom rising on an upright stem from basal green leaves, celebrating the sudden burst of desert floral life that emerges across Somali landscapes following the rains.
