African Sacred Ibis (Threskiornis aethiopicus)
The African Sacred Ibis (Threskiornis aethiopicus) is a wading bird in the ibis family (Threskiornithidae), widespread across wetlands, coastal lagoons, marshy river valleys, and seasonal floodplains throughout sub-Saharan Africa and Somalia. Famously venerated in ancient Egyptian culture as the earthly incarnation of the god Thoth, the bird is distinguished by its pristine white body plumage contrasted with a featherless, ink-black head and neck, long curved black bill, and dense black plumes that drape over its tail. Feeding in flocks across shallow waters and mudflats, the sacred ibis uses its sensitive decurved bill to probe for aquatic insects, crustaceans, mollusks, and small fish, playing a crucial role in maintaining wetland ecology. Designed by Corrado Mancioli for the 1959 bird series, the illustration integrates the standing ibis within a sweeping stylized "S" motif across a warm sunset-orange field, celebrating the avian heritage of the Somali coast and river basins.
