White Stork (Ciconia ciconia)
The White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) is a large migratory wading bird in the family Ciconiidae. While breeding across Europe and Western Asia, substantial populations undertake massive biannual migrations along the East African flyway, wintering across the riverine grasslands, floodplains, and seasonal wetlands of southern Somalia and the Horn of Africa. Recognized for its pristine white plumage accented by jet-black flight feathers, long red legs, and a sharp, straight red beak, the stork serves as an essential ecological controller of locust swarms, grasshoppers, and small aquatic organisms. Issued in 1959 as part of a definitive series dedicated to native and migratory birdlife, the modernist graphic design by Corrado Mancioli integrates the standing stork within an elegant, sweeping red ribbon in the shape of the letter "S" (for Somalia), set against a warm parchment background to highlight the nation's rich avifauna.
