300th anniversary of the Sacred Congregation - 20 besa
This stamp commemorates the 300th anniversary of the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith (Propaganda Fide), established by the Vatican in 1622 to coordinate global missionary work. The central biblical scene depicts Jesus Christ sending his apostles to preach the Gospel, reinforced by the Latin inscription "Praedicate Evangelium Omni Creaturae" (Preach the Gospel to every creature), which carries a direct message of spiritual guidance, universal religious outreach, and divine mandate.Flanking the main illustration are portrait medallions of Pope Gregory XV and Christ, alongside the coats of arms of the House of Savoy and the Congregation itself, symbolizing the historical alignment between Italian political sovereignty and Roman Catholic institutions. Within the context of Italian Somaliland, the "SOMALIA ITALIANA" overprint and the "besa 13" local currency surcharge illustrate how metropolitan religious celebrations were utilized in the colony to emphasize the role of Catholic missions in education, healthcare, and the cultural assimilation of the territory under the protective umbrella of the Italian administration.
